Deval Patrick is an American politician, lawyer, author, and businessman. He served as the 71st governor of Massachusetts and is now a candidate for President of the United States in the 2020 election. Early Life

Patrick was born on July 31, 1956, in Chicago to Emily Mae and Pat Patrick. He was mostly raised by his mother as his father abandoned his family in order to play music in New York and also because he had fathered a daughter by another woman. He went to Milton Academy in Massachusetts. Patrick then graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard College in 1978. He returned to Harvard for Law School and earned his Juris Doctor, again with cum laude honors in 1982.

Career

After graduating, he served as a law clerk to Judge Stephen Reinhardt on the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. In 1990, he joined the Boston law firm of Hill & Barlow where he managed high-profile cases like civil lawsuit against Mike Tyson.

In 1994, Patrick was nominated as the United States Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division by Bill Clinton. During that time, he also worked on other issues like racial profiling, police misconduct, and treatment of incarcerated animals.

In 1997, Patrick joined the firm called “Day, Berry & Howard” and was appointed to serve as Chairman of Texaco’s Equality and Fairness Task Force to oversee terms of a race discrimination settlement. In 2001, he left Texaco to become the Executive-Vice President and General Counsel at The Coca-Cola Company. Patrick then served on the board of directors of ACC Capital Holdings from 2004 to 2006.

In 2005, he announced his candidacy for governor of Massachusetts. He won the general election with 55% of the vote in 2007 to become the first Democratic governor of Massachusetts and the state’s first African-American governor.

During his two terms as a governor, he passed a $13 billion transportation overhaul, won a $4 billion federal education grant, signed $1 billion in tax increases into law and raised the state’s minimum wage from $8 per hour to $11 per hour.

From 2015 to 2019 he worked at Bain Capital, a private equity firm co-founded by Senator Mitt Romney. On November 14, 2019, Deval Patrick formally entered the 2020 Presidential campaign.
